Secrets To Dog Training – Dog Behavior Coaching

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by doggielover

Dog obedience training is an absolute must for anyone with an out of control pup or grown dog.  Being a dog owner myself, I know and understand how the unconditional love from your dog or puppy dog can truly brighten up a home and your life.

My spouse and I welcomed a new puppy A.J.  roughly a year back and he’s been a great dog.  Now on the down side he is constantly barking at other dogs and folks to indicate where it is truly beginning to irritate me.  So irrespective of how terrible your dog is the smartest thing that we have done and you should as well is to get some sort of training.

These are some things that my better half and I have learned when we took A.J. thru training.

1.  Never ask your dog to do something that he or she can get out of.  This could cause disappointment with your dog and in turn the dog will not reply well.  Rather, try respecting dog’s behavior and act accordingly at the opening stage.

2.  Sounds straightforward nevertheless it is amazing how well it works and how many forget or take this point for granted.  Reward your dog for good behavior.

3.  Never punish or scold your dog under training.  A punishment will put in negative feelings into your dog.

4.  Ultimately, penalize your dog for not behaving, now this does not mean punish, there’s a difference.  Penalize your dog by taking away something or do something that he does not like such as a jerk of the leash.

Having a dog provides so many great benefits but wouldn’t like to have a pet that listens and is not destructive?  Naturally you do who wouldn’t.  Does what my better half and I did and get some training for your dog you actually won’t regret the choice to do so?

How is your dog’s behavior?  Are you continually apologizing for what your dog did when you’re not at home or better yet saying sorry to people when he barks at them or their dogs?  Well people it’s time to put a stop it with methods to Dog Training Home Course.

Dog Chewing Problems — Three Things You Need To Know To Stop Dogs From Chewing

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by doggielover

Are you frustrated with dog chewing problems?  Why do canines engage in destructive dog behavior like this?  How can you stop destructive chewing?  Learn how to stop dogs from chewing.

Why Does My Dog Chew On Everything?

Puppies chew on things for one reason; they’re cutting teeth.  If you’ve ever been around a human baby who’s teething, you know how chewing on a teething ring helps soothe those sore gums.  It’s like this for puppies too.  They’re in the process of losing baby teeth while adult teeth are coming in.  Sore gums are the result, but chewing on things helps soothe the pain.

An older dog may chew for many reasons.  One of the most common is that it helps to relieve stress and anxiety.  When a dog chews, endorphins are released.  These are chemicals that soothe and calm your dog.  You dog doesn’t know about endorphins, but he does know that chewing on things makes him feel better.

Chewing also helps to keep your dog’s teeth clean and strong.  Remember, if your dog is chewing, he’s not digging holes or barking, so there is an upside to this.

So chewing isn’t all bad.  But chewing becomes destructive chewing when your dog chews on things other than his toys.  How do you stop dogs from chewing on your toys?

How Do I Train My Dog Not To Chew?

You may be surprised to learn that your dog doesn’t know the difference between your stuff and his.  Even if he has lots of toys to chew on, he’ll still chew on a chair leg because he thinks everything in the house is a toy.  It’s up to you to teach him two things; that everything is not a toy, and that he’s not allowed to chew on things that belong to you.

Start by teaching him which toys are his.  Play with your dog, using one of his toys.  He’ll associate the toy with having fun, both with you, and by playing with the toy.  Another way to teach your dog that his toys are wonderful is to get a toy you can stuff with peanut butter or another treat.  He gets an instant food reward when he licks it out while playing with it.

If your dog picks up something that belongs to you, use the “drop-it” command, or clap your hands and make a noise to startle him into dropping it.  As soon as he obeys you, give him one of his toys right away to replace what he just dropped.  When he starts playing with it, reward him.  This is how you teach him that it’s good for him to chew on his own toys, but not good when he chews on yours.

You’ll still want to dog-proof your home, and put irreplaceable items away until you know you can trust him.  Or else keep him confined to one room in your home where he can’t destroy anything in your absence.

Shouldn’t I Punish Him For Destructive Dog Behavior?

No.  If you don’t catch your dog in the act, he won’t have a clue why you’re mad at him.  All you’ll succeed in doing is teaching him to wait until you’ve left the scene to start destructive chewing.

Dogs operate on rewards.  If you reward your dog with attention (good or bad) for doing something, he’ll continue to do it, even if it’s something you don’t want him to do.  Reward his good behavior with lots of praise, while ignoring his bad dog behavior as much as you can.  A dog won’t continue doing something if he doesn’t get a reward for doing it.

Training your dog is an ongoing process that never really ends.  You’ll find that investing in a good dog training course will repay itself many times over in building a great relationship with your dog, while avoiding dog chewing problems.

Jack Russell Terrier Training – The Drop It Command

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by doggielover

Just because they’re identified as remarkably intelligent breed doesn’t suggest that they can do well without jack russell terrier training. Every dog, no matter what breed, needs to undergo proper training to make them a delight to be around.

Since jack russell terriers were bred to track down quarry from their dens, it is therefore not unusual if you will find it hard to get your four-legged friend give up, abandon or drop something he shouldn’t have. But challenging as it may seem to be, you really have to train your pet commands such as these to make certain that he is free from danger at all times. You would not want your precious terrier to eat other dog’s poop, right?

The best time to get started on training this command is when he is having fun with his toy. Get his focus by holding a treat in front of his nose. Naturally he will drop the toy in exchange of treat. Repeat the procedure and once he has become accustomed to dropping the toy every time he sees a treat, pop in the command “drop it!”. Say the command in sharp and firm tone to let him realize that you are serious with the task and not playing with him. If he drops the toy after you gave the verbal command, reward him with praise in addition to the treat you’re holding.

Reinforce the command at any moment of the day, with different stuff and in different areas of the house. If he is reliably trained with the command, start to replace the food rewards with a lot of praise and time to play to prevent him from turning out to be food dependent.

Perfecting the drop it command isn’t just a trick to amuse others and show them how great a dog owner you happen to be.The main objective of dog training is to keep your dog in control and to save him from possible hazards like ingesting foreign objects or chewing household stuff.
