House Train Your Puppy With A Bell

Posted on February 14th, 2011 by admin

HERE'S A GREAT TIP! I've been following this dog trainer for a long time (I love her books!) and was really psyched to see that she has a video up now about this. It's only a couple minutes long but it's really helpful. Click on the video to watch it. It should answer your questions...

Samba (our 4.5 month old choc lab) was house trained, but wouldn’t let us know (by barking for example) that she needed to go out. So, we decided to train her to ring a bell – here is the movie. It only took about 3 or 4 days – she is very clever :)

Mom made my dad return Yorkie? Best time of year to get a puppy?

Posted on February 6th, 2011 by admin

Well last Saturday, my dad bought a puppy from a breeder, but didn’t tell my mom. It was actually paid for by my brothers and I. The yorkie was beautiful and well-behaved, and we bought food, a bed, leash&harness, puppy pads, and some other things and then started right away housebreaking her on the pads.
When my mom got home at midnight-ish (shes a nurse) she was sold on the puppy, and was alright with it until about 2am. My mom said she jumped out of her bed, ran to the kitchen, peed in three spots, then ran to the rug and left a pile there. My mom chased after her and put her in a green tub with blankets so she couldnt get out. Well, the yorkie jumped high, and then went to the staircase and hopped up the steps after my mom.

Now my mom suddenly dislikes her, and my dad has to follow her, and so he said stuff about getting her back in the spring or summer when we didn’t have school so that it’d be easier to housebreak her. Nobodys home from about 1-3pm usually. Soon after that they returned all of her things and then the puppy was gone just like that.

I’ve wanted a puppy for all my life and now I just had one day and she’s gone.
Is this fair & makes sense,? I don’t think it’s all too impossible to housebreak a puppy over fall/winter?

Crating the puppy at night is the best option. As for worrying about trying to housebreak it in the fall or winter, why not try litter box training it? A Yorkie is a small dog, and can be easily litter box trained (with patience).

You can buy a litter box from a pet supply store. We use newspaper in it for my dog, and it works fine. At first, you will need to use a leash on the puppy to keep it in the box. Praise it just as you would if it went potty outside. You might also want to teach the puppy to ring a bell when it has to go out.

Little dogs are very hard to take outside in the winter if you live where it snows. Our neighbors actually have to shovel a portion of their lawn for their dogs:)

Your parents might want to wait to get the puppy until the summer so you and your brothers will bond with it better. I got my dog in October (have had him for almost 8 years!) and still had to go to school. He ended up bonding with my mom (we recently got a cat who also loves my mom, so the dog has reverted back to me). The puppy will probably bond best with whoever is with it the most.

How To Housebreak a Dog

With kindness, time, and lots of newspapers, you can train your dog to go to the bathroom outside of the house.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Lots of patience
Newspapers
White vinegar
Liquid detergent
Odor-masking spray

Step 1: Keep the papers in one spot

Choose one area, such as a back bedroom or the bathroom, and lay down three layers of newspapers on the floor. This will become your dog’s “potty place” in the house. During the times that no one is at home, keep your pet confined to the potty place.

Step 2: Watch for warning signs

Whenever your dog crouches, sniffs the ground, or walks in circles, take them outside; these typically mean they “gotta go.” While they’re relieving themselves, speak a voice command such as “Go pee” or “Go outside.”

Step 3: Transition them outside

As your dog gets used to going outdoors, the next time you see one of the warning signs, ask your dog if they have to “Go pee” or “Go outside” and then take them into the backyard. Give them lots of praise after they’ve gone to the bathroom outside the house.

Step 4: Accidents do happen

While your dog is learning, accidents will happen. If they relieve themselves in another part of the house, say “No!” Then firmly pick them up and take them to their potty place. After your dog has finished doing their business in the right spot, praise them for going in the right spot.

Tip: If your pet does have an accident, don’t get angry or rub their nose in the spot.

Step 5: Hide the scent

Clean up an accident with 1/4 cup white vinegar and a squirt of liquid detergent mixed with 1 quart warm water. Scrub the area with this mixture and then spray it with an odor-masking product found at pet stores. This will keep your puppy from coming back to this area.

Step 6: Smaller targets

Over time, reduce the number of papers in the potty place. This will teach your dog to go in one small spot. Within a few weeks, you should be able to stop using papers totally — your dog is now housebroken!
