Key Tips to a Happy, Housebroken Puppy

Posted on February 11th, 2011 by Corson Strand

HERE'S A GREAT TIP! I've been following this dog trainer for a long time (I love her books!) and was really psyched to see that she has a video up now about this. It's only a couple minutes long but it's really helpful. Click on the video to watch it. It should answer your questions...

What is the key to house training your puppy? Patience, persistence, gentle firmness. These are extremely important for all dog training that you do, but since housetraining is usually the first, real training you do with dog, they are especially important. By correctly house training your puppy, you are setting the foundation for strong and loving relationship with your puppy.

It may very well be that the idea of housetraining your puppy makes you shudder and cringe at the thought of yourself sopping up rivers of pee and worse. For many, the mere utterance of the word, “potty training” sends them running for high ground. You don’t have to be among their number if you understand the key elements of housebreaking your puppy.

How long does it take to before you have a potty discipline puppy? Experts say–and my own experience confirms this–that you should see consistent results in two to three weeks. However, professionals also warn that it may take two to three months without the dog eliminating before the job is truly accomplished.

If there is one, key essential to housetraining puppies, one basic factor that you must never lose sight of, it is the sameness of routine. Dogs love predictable routine. It makes them feel secure. What this means for you is that you want to carry out your training routine the same way every day until you have reached the target objective.

The key basics to housetraining your puppy include the following: set a routine and do not change it; take your puppy outside to go to the bathroom once every one or two hours; establish a schedule for feeding and do not change it; accompany your puppy outside ten to fifteen minutes after feeding; praise your puppy when it eliminates outside; accidents are bound to happen inside–never show anger when this occurs; and last, thoroughly clean the areas inside where the puppy has made a mess.

If you pay attention to these key basics and follow the pointers given, you will soon reach the goal of a happy and housebroken pet. And just as important, you will have established the pattern for any future training that you have planned for your dog. Your pet will look forward to your company and learning how to please you.

Dog Training- How To Potty Train a Dog

Posted on February 6th, 2011 by admin

http://dogtraining.dogtraininginformation.org
How to potty train a puppy does not involve a potty or trying to make it learn how to use one. Instead you will be trying to make your pet house trained by teaching it to eliminate outside instead of on the place it sleeps, or on any other location inside your house. You may also use the training to teach your puppy to eliminate at a designated place inside your home. This will prevent your house from getting smelly. You will also be able to avoid the task of taking care of the mess which a puppy is sure to leave everywhere around your home.

In order to make the task more enjoyable, do not look at a method on how to potty train a puppy as the unpleasant side of having a puppy. You should take it as the first step in the bonding process between pet and master, a process which will leave a healthy and happy relationship as a result. This relationship would be your reward for training your pet to be more responsible. You should start your potty training as soon as you get your puppy home and always have in mind that it still does not have a full control of its bowel and bladder movements yet.

Any method on how to potty train a puppy would be more effective if you are going to conduct each task at the same time each day. Do not give your pet food within four hours before bedtime or take away its water bowl two hours before going to sleep. This will disrupt the routine which is so essential in teaching him to do certain tasks. Training your puppy also involves getting yourself into a routine too. Since you will have to take it out at the same time in the morning and before going to sleep, you too should wake up and sleep at roughly the same time each day.

potty training puppies, do’s and don’ts ?

Posted on January 9th, 2011 by admin

first off do you recommend putting a puppy in a kennel over night? if so will this hinder his ability to be able to be let out and roam freely when it gets older? best way to discipline and correct a puppy if it has an accident in the house?

Ink the 2nd,

If you want putting your puppy in a kennel over night thats cool, except he’ll more than likely whine till he falls asleep and that can be annoying especially if you’re a working person and have to get up early in the morning. There is no such thing as discipling your puppy for pottying in the house, your discipline will fall on deaf ears so to speak, as he won’t under why he is getting punished. In doing so, you’re telling your puppy he should never potty! Dogs learn by association, you need to teach him pottying in the house is a no-no, and pottying outside is an okay! Here is what you do. Take your puppy out once every hour. When he potty’s say, "Good HURRY!" and pet him vigorously or give him a treat. Do this over a 4-5 day period, then when you take him out just say, "HURRY!" and he should immediately look for a place to potty. Be observant of where he potty’s at, as dogs tend to use the same dumping area so to speak. Take him to this area and say, "HURRY!" Around 4-p.m. pick up his water bowl, and prior to yuor retiring for the night take him out for his last potty. This way he won’t have to hold his water over night. If he walks to the door and stands there looking at you, take him outside as he is telling you he needs to potty. Keep in mind, he is no different than a small child who is learning to control his spinchter muscles. Picking up his water bowl around 4-p.m. will take the pressure off him till morning. It is no diffferent than your drinking a large glass of water then going to bed. Guess what happens to you in the middle of the night. I hope that I have been of some help to you and your puppy.

Potty training puppies. Help. >.<?

Posted on November 3rd, 2010 by admin

I just recently got a puppy. He is almost 8 weeks old and he still has yet to learn to go potty outside. I find it hard to keep track of when he needs to go to the bathroom because he is so random about it. I have a another dog who’s about a year old and is pretty good about going outside to do her business. When she was about 8 weeks old I noticed that she had a little schedule when she needed to go to the bathroom. Which was after she would get up from a nap. But with the puppy I have now its hard to keep track of him. Because I will let him out, he’ll go pee. Then he will come inside and 15 minutes later will pee on the floor. Is this because he is a male? And I was wondering if any of you have advice for making potty training a little easier. I do have to babysit my younger sisters and keep up with the house cleaning so I do try to at least take the puppy out every hour. I just hate standing out in the cold around midnight waiting for my puppy to go potty when all is wants to do is take a nap in the snow.

Try crate training. Any dog isn’t comfortable in a small space with their own "mess", so he will hold it until you let him out, straight outside of course. you reward him doing his business outside with a treat and some playtime. then it is back in his crate. the crate should be big enough that the puppy can walk around and lay down easy, but no so big that he can just pee in one corner and sit in the other.
