How do you crate train puppies?

Posted on September 30th, 2009 by admin

HERE'S A GREAT TIP! I've been following this dog trainer for a long time (I love her books!) and was really psyched to see that she has a video up now about this. It's only a couple minutes long but it's really helpful. Click on the video to watch it. It should answer your questions...

I have 2 three month year old germanshepard mixed with golden retriever, I keep them both in a crate in the garage and they pee in the crate all of the time, and if I keep them in the garage without the crate they pee, and poo all over the place! I need serious help or else my mom is going to give them away!

puppies need to go out every two hours on the hour to get use to going outside to do their business. If you have to crate them the minute you open the crate you say outside! they will soon know that means to go to the door for potty. You have a great breed and fast learners it just takes time and a lot of patience. If Mom is willing to help when you are not around that helps then they know to take command from others and not just you.If they do have accidents in their crate (their home) DO NOT SCOLD THEM clean it up and take them outside with the clean up (accident) and show them and say potty/poop outside let them see it, smell it and they will soon understand what you are telling them but you must be consitent on the procedure. In time they will get it. Puppies are like infants they learn what we teach them. Good Luck!!

You have to be with them enough to take them out to use their business in the yard on a frequent manner. You keep them cooped up in a cage all day, sure their going to mess in there.
Plus being in a cage all day makes them anti-social and hyper.

If they are tolerating being left in the crate long term well, they are crate trained.

It is NOT a way to potty train. It HELPS with potty training a ton, but it wont’ do it for you! They still have small bladders, yes they would prefer not to go in their living space but if they have to go they have to go!

First off, how big is the crate. They should be able to lie down and turn around. If they have extra room, block it off.

How long are they being left? You should be bringing them out regularly. get on a schedule. They also shouldn’t be in the cate when you are around to supervise, it is a way to keep them safe not a way to forget about the dog. Let them out of the crate if you can watch for signs they are about to go.

Try bringing the crate inside so you can listen for whining. Again, it isn’t supposed to be a way to forget about the dog, just a way to keep them from getting into stuff when you can’t watch them.

If you keep them anywhere for too long, they will have no choice but to go where they can. At 3 months they will need to be taken out frequently, about every 2/3 hours. You have the right idea about keeping them in the crate in the meantime, but they can’t be crated all day. If you don’t have the time to give them constant supervision during the day you are not prepared to crate train such young puppies. Dogs and puppies shouldn’t be crated more than 8 straight hours or 12 hours on/off each day. But if you have the time, you can get them accustomed to going outside by putting them in their crates for 2 hours, taking them out to feed them, play with them, give them water, train them, etc for about 10 minutes, and then taking them straight outside. They’ll learn that outside is the place to go. At that point you’ll just have to be there to give them an opportunity to get outside.
