Dog Care During Summer
Posted on May 31st, 2010 by doggielover

Summer is a great season for both dog and owner.Plenty of long warm days and evenings mean ideal walking conditions.A brisk walk in the morning or a long evening stroll really is one of life’s pleasures. The fresh air and exercise is good for your health and your dog will love you for accompanying him on his daily walk. Buth the summer months can also bring with them a number of health hazards that you need to be aware of.
BBQs
A BBQ is often the highlight of the summer. It is common that when you are outside cooking your dog will be enjoying the garden with you.But did you realise that having your dog around a BBQ can be very dangerous. The dog will not understand that the BBQ is hot, possibly until it is too late. If your dog is lively and enjoys running around it could quite easily bump into the BBQ unit. Also, you need to be aware that human food might taste good to a dog, but it isn’t necessarily good for it.Dogs don’t mind begging for more, so offering him one sausage will only mean he expects another. However, such greasy food offers little nutritional value and will only result in your dog becoming a fussy eater; one who expects to be fed from your plate.Just make sure he has a full bowl of his favourite dog food close at hand – that should help to keep him happy. Bones are another hazard, so never let your dog eat chicken wings or pork chops.
A plentiful supply of fresh water
Water is an essential part of your dog’s daily nutritional routine. It becomes even more important during the hot summer months.Offer a bowl full of clean water during every meal and make sure that this dish is topped up throughout the day. When you are out with the dog remember to take a supply of water with you.Your dog will be grateful of the drink!
Dogs in Cars
You should never, ever leave your dog alone in your car for a prolonged period of time, especially in times of hot weather. Cars can get really hot and your dog is at risk of dehydration or death if you leave him locked inside.Instead, take your dog with you wherever you go, or leave him at home.
Sunscreen
Like us, dogs can be negatively affected by the sun.Did you know that you can now buy sunscreen for your dog, which is great for the times you know he will be outside in the sunshine for prolonged lengths of time. Pay close attention to those areas with little fur coverage, such as the nose and ears.
